When we started building the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser, I knew the first question we would get was: "How is this different from Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser?"
It's a fair question. We already have a cleanser. A good one. So why make another?
The answer is that these two formulas are doing fundamentally different jobs. They look similar from a distance, but the skin experience, the ingredient philosophy, and the skin types they're built for are very different. If you're already using one of them and loving it, you're probably in the right place. If you're new to Onekind and trying to figure out where to start, this will help.

The Core Difference: How They Clean
The biggest difference is foam.
The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser is a cream-to-lather formula. It starts as a rich cream, then works into a gentle lather when you add water. It uses a blend of mild, sulfate-free surfactants to dissolve impurities and makeup, then rinses completely clean.
The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser does not foam at all. It is a non-foaming emollient cream that melts away buildup using a single mild sugar surfactant and a blend of nourishing facial oils, including sunflower, sweet almond, meadowfoam, apricot kernel, and sea buckthorn. You can rinse it off or wipe it off. Either way, it leaves a light, protective film on the skin.
If you're the kind of person who doesn't feel fully cleansed without a lather, you're going to love the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser. If the thought of foam brings back memories of dry, tight skin, the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser was made for you.
What Each Formula Leaves Behind
This is where the formulas differ the most, and it matters more than most people realize.
After you rinse the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser, what stays on your skin is not oil. It's a trio of humectant actives: hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, Pentavitin (saccharide isomerate, a plant-derived moisture binder that bonds directly to skin proteins), and panthenol (vitamin B5). There's also magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, a stable vitamin C derivative that helps visibly brighten skin over time. None of these rinse away. Your skin is left feeling hydrated and balanced, not stripped.
After the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser, your skin has a light emollient finish from those botanical oils. The formula also contains TeraBiome glycolipids, a postbiotic ingredient that supports the skin's natural microbiome balance. It's calming and nourishing, and leaves skin feeling coated in the best way.
Different skin types want different finishes. People with dry or sensitive skin often love the residual nourishment from the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser. People with combination or oily skin, or anyone applying SPF right after cleansing who wants a clean canvas, tend to prefer the humectant finish from the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser.

Scent and Sensory Experience
This matters more than people admit when choosing a cleanser.
The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser has a cool, herbal scent from spearmint and peppermint, with a noticeable tingle when it activates. It feels fresh and invigorating, which is why it works especially well as a morning cleanser for anyone who wants to wake their skin up.
Both formulas are free of synthetic fragrance and rely only on essential oil blends for scent.
The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser has a soft, floral warmth from damask rose, chamomile, and lavender. It's calming and spa-like. If your evening routine is your decompression ritual, this is the cleanser that fits that mood.

Can You Use Both?
Yes, and a lot of our customers do.
A common pairing: Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser at night as your first cleanse to melt off SPF and makeup using its emollient oil base, followed by the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser as your second cleanse to truly purify the skin and deliver those post-rinse humectant actives before the rest of your routine. In the morning, the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser on its own is often all you need.
A Note on the Radical Repair® System
If you're new to the Radical Repair® line, the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser is a natural entry point. The full system, including the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum and Radical Repair® Barrier Balm, is built around the same philosophy: formulas that actively support the skin barrier and deliver visible results. The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser starts that process at the very first step of your routine.
The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser lives outside the Radical Repair® system. It is its own product with its own formulation philosophy, and it's exceptional at what it does. But if you're building a Radical Repair® routine, starting with the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser keeps the ingredient philosophy consistent from step one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser and the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser?
The main difference is texture, cleansing method, and what each formula leaves behind. The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser is a cream-to-lather formula that foams and rinses clean, leaving behind humectant actives like hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid and Pentavitin that help skin feel hydrated and balanced long after rinsing. The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser is a non-foaming emollient cream that melts away buildup using botanical oils, leaving a light nourishing film on skin. The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser suits combination, oily, and all skin types. The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser is especially well suited to sensitive and dry skin.
Which Onekind cleanser is best for sensitive skin?
Both formulas are formulated for sensitive skin and are dermatologist tested. The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser uses a single mild sugar surfactant and a botanical oil blend, making it the gentler sensory experience overall. The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser is also appropriate for sensitive skin, but the multi-surfactant lather and cool mint scent are a bigger sensory experience that may not suit everyone with highly reactive skin.
Is the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser good for oily skin?
Yes. Because it uses a sulfate-free surfactant blend rather than oils to cleanse, it delivers a thorough cleanse without leaving a residual emollient film. The humectant actives that remain on the skin after rinsing, including hyaluronic acid and Pentavitin, hydrate without adding oil. It's a strong option for combination and oily skin types who want a cleanser that does not strip, but also does not leave skin feeling coated.
Can I use a cream cleanser every day?
Yes. Both the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser and the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser are formulated for twice-daily use, morning and night. The gentle cleansing systems in both formulas are designed to be mild enough for regular use without causing dryness or barrier disruption over time.
What does HydraCactus Complex® do in the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser?
HydraCactus Complex® is Onekind's proprietary blend of prickly pear cactus extract (Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract) and desert date oil. In the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser, it helps calm the appearance of redness, softens skin, and helps the skin barrier look balanced and resilient after cleansing. Unlike many active ingredients that require leave-on time to work, HydraCactus Complex® provides visible benefits even in a rinse-off formula.
What is Pentavitin and why does it belong in a face cleanser?
Pentavitin, listed on the ingredient label as Saccharide Isomerate, is a plant-derived moisture binder that mimics the skin's own natural moisturization factor. Unlike ingredients that simply sit on top of the skin, Pentavitin bonds directly to skin proteins, which means it stays on the skin even after you rinse. That bonding action is not broken by water, so skin feels hydrated long after rinsing. Most people assume a rinse-off product cannot deliver lasting hydration. Pentavitin is the reason the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser can.
Does the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser remove makeup?
Yes. The cream-to-lather formula is designed to dissolve makeup and daily buildup effectively. For heavy or waterproof makeup, consider double cleansing: use the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser or a dedicated makeup remover as your first cleanse to melt off makeup, then follow with the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser as your second cleanse.
Are Onekind cleansers cruelty-free?
Yes. The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser is double certified cruelty-free by both Leaping Bunny and PETA. The Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser is also cruelty-free.
How much does the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser cost?
The Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser retails for $34 USD for a 3.3 fl. oz (100 mL) tube. It is formulated for daily use morning and night, so one tube covers both AM and PM for approximately 60 days with standard use.
Which cleanser should I use first when double cleansing?
Start with the Clean Slate Barrier Boosting Cleanser as your first cleanse. Its emollient oil base is ideal for dissolving SPF, makeup, and surface-level buildup. Follow with the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser as your second cleanse to purify the skin and deliver those post-rinse humectant actives. This two-step approach gives you the benefits of both formulas in a single evening routine.
What is the Radical Repair® skincare system?
Radical Repair® is Onekind's advanced skincare line built around barrier support and visible hydration. The system includes the Radical Repair® Nourishing Cream Cleanser, the Radical Repair® Retinol Reinvented Serum, and the Radical Repair® Barrier Balm. Each product is formulated to work independently, but together they deliver a complete routine built around the same ingredient philosophy: strengthen the barrier, support long-lasting hydration, and deliver visible results from the first step to the last.
